How to back up your digital images to Google Drive — simple step-by-step
Below are two quick methods: Desktop (Windows / Mac) and Phone (Android / iPhone). Pick the one you use. I’ve included a few helpful tips at the end.
Desktop (using web browser)
Open your web browser and go to drive.google.com. Sign in with your Google account.
Create a folder for your photos: click New → Folder, name it (e.g., Photo Backups 2025) and open it.
Click New → File upload (to upload single images) or New → Folder upload (to upload a whole folder).
In the file dialog, select the images or the folder from your computer and click Open / Upload.
Wait for the upload to finish — progress appears in the bottom-right corner. Don’t close the browser until it completes.
(Optional) Right-click the uploaded folder → Share to give others access, or right-click a file → Get link to copy a shareable link.
Check storage: click the gear icon → Settings → view Storage to see how much Google Drive space you’ve used.
Desktop (automatic sync using Google Drive for desktop)
Download and install Google Drive for desktop from Google (search “Google Drive for desktop download” if needed).
Sign in and follow setup prompts. Choose Back up folders from your computer.
Add the folder(s) where you store images (e.g., Pictures or your photo editing folder).
Choose sync preferences: Stream files (saves space locally) or Mirror files (stores local copies).
Once configured, your selected folders will automatically upload to Drive and stay backed up.
Phone — Android
Install or open the Google Drive app and sign in.
Tap the + (plus) button → Upload → Photos and videos.
Select images (or tap an album) then Open / Upload.
Alternatively, use Google Photos app: open it → Library → Back up & sync → turn it ON to automatically back up all phone photos to your Google account.
Phone — iPhone
Install/open Google Drive and sign in.
Tap the + → Upload → Photos and Videos, pick photos, then Upload.
Or install Google Photos and enable Back up & sync (Photos app settings → Google Photos) to back up automatically.
Quick tips & best practices
Organise before upload: Create year/month folders (e.g., 2025/2025-11) so files are easy to find.
File names: Rename important shoots (e.g., 2025-11-20_kinder-shoot_001.jpg) for clarity.
Use Google Photos for auto-backups: It’s designed for photos and can auto-sync from phones with options for quality.
Check storage limits: Free Google accounts have limited space. If you have lots of photos consider Google One (paid) or regularly clean duplicates.
Keep a second backup: For extra safety, also back up to an external drive or another cloud service.
Security: Use a strong password and enable 2-Step Verification on your Google account.
Verify uploads: Randomly open a few uploaded photos after backup to ensure they work.
Delete local copies only after confirmed backup: Don’t delete originals until you’ve confirmed successful upload and integrity.
